From experimental design, through acquisition, to data analysis, using multiple techniques to solve research questions poses many challenges that can quickly dull the initial appeal of correlative analysis. In this session, we will discuss the potential pitfalls of correlative experiments as well as how to extract information from the resulting multi-layered data sets to maximise the rewards of correlating different imaging modalities.
Windowless detectors promote a new form of EDS, opening SEMs to applications that were previously unobtainable. Working with accelerating voltages of ≤ 5kV and extreme sensitivity, windowless analysis enables both surface-sensitive measurements of materials to resolve EDS data at the nanoscale, and rapid imaging of the many light elements within biological samples to complement ultrastructural electron data. In this session, we will discuss the advantages of windowless analysis in contrast to conventional EDS.
With SEMs being able to achieve a wide range of magnifications, information at a multitude of scales is often of interest. We often have to search samples to find particular sites of interest, before going on to characterise complete samples. In this session, we will discuss how the latest generation of EDS hardware and software come together to guide the user through a rapid process of live, colour navigation around the sample, incorporating live chemical imaging as well as enabling large-area automation for characterising complete samples.
