Environment Policy
Oxford Instruments is a leading provider of high technology products and services to the world’s leading industrial companies and scientific community. Our products support our customers to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, accelerating the transition to a greener, healthier, more connected advanced society. Whilst we are proud to be recognised as the leaders in what we do and for the positive impact our products make in the world, we take seriously our responsibility to minimise our own environmental footprint.
Over recent years, through our focused efforts and the positive engagement of our employees we have made excellent progress in significantly reducing the CO2 emissions and waste products from our manufacturing sites, facilities, and activities (so called Scope 1 & 2 emissions). It is now time to expand our goals to include the environmental impact of our broader activities to include our supply chain and the usage of our products by our customers (Scope 3). As part of this process, we have set ambitious intermediate carbon reduction goals for 2030 and a target to be net zero by 2045.
This Policy will be implemented at all sites around the world. It commits the Group to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045 by significantly reducing our environmental footprint and through continuous monitoring and by addressing our activities that contribute to climate change. Our strategy will include continued energy savings and efficient energy usage, the choice of our supply chain partners as well as the adoption of new technologies and systems as they become available.
Policy
All Oxford Instruments businesses and sites will adopt the following overarching objectives as appropriate:
- Fulfil all relevant compliance obligations, including applicable laws, regulations and other requirements in our chosen markets and implement best practice in all our activities.
- Invest in the development of new products, applications, and services to enable our customers to meet or exceed their environmental aspirations.
- Reduce the environmental footprint of our products and services through their full life cycle, including energy and raw material usage, recyclability, upgradability, and waste.
- Manage our activities to protect the environment, including the prevention of pollution.
- Purchase electricity from renewable sources where available.
- For new facilities, avoid the use of fossil fuels where practical alternatives are available.
- In existing facilities invest in new infrastructure to replace existing fossil fuel systems as suitable technologies and alternatives become practical and viable.
- Monitor energy usage at all our sites taking practical actions to minimise the local and global carbon footprint.
- Utilise technology to communicate with our customers, suppliers, and overseas sites to minimise carbon intensive travel.
- Train our employees in environmental awareness to enable them to carry out their work with due consideration for any environmental impact.
- Minimise raw material usage, harmful emissions, waste to landfill, and energy use.
- Consider reuse or recycling of waste outputs but, where this is not possible, dispose of in line with relevant legislation.
- Work with suppliers and business partners who are aligned to our sustainability journey and who are engaged in delivering the reduction in environmental impact of their products and services.
- Devise and implement local objectives to improve environmental performance at and across all our sites.
- Review climate change risks and mitigations at primary manufacturing, office and service sites.
- Undertake a climate risk assessment before making an acquisition or investing in a new facility.
- Where sites are certified to ISO 14001 continual improvement of the relevant Environmental Management System is required.
This Policy applies to all employees. Senior Management is responsible for implementation.
