Microstat®HiResII liquid helium (LHe) continuous flow cryostat for high resolution optical microscopy/spectroscopy
A liquid helium cooled, vacuum loading continuous flow (CF) optical cryostat with extremely low sample vibration and sample drift at both constant and changing temperatures.

- Compact, light weight system - only 1.5 kg, and less than 49 mm deep

- micro-Raman and micro-photoluminescence (µPL) mapping of semiconductor microstructures with sub-micron spatial resolution
- µPL quantum dot (QD) measurements - even down to single-photon counting

Operation
The MicrostatHiResII optical cryostat works on a continuous flow principle using an oil-free pump to draw liquid helium from a storage vessel along a transfer tube to the heat exchanger ("pull mode"). Temperature control is achieved by a combination of automatic or manual helium flow control and power dissipated in an electrical heater, regulated using a temperature controller.
The cryostat can also be used in "push mode", in that case the flow of liquid helium is generated by pressurising the storage dewar. The advantage is that the need for a gas flow pump is removed, eliminating the vibration and noise generated by the pump and reducing system cost.
Options
- Windows
- A wide range of window materials can be fitted to the MicrostatHiResII - see the 'Windows for optical cryostats guide' in Downloads and Links
- A 0.5 mm thick Spectrosil B quartz window with 10 mm clear access is fitted as standard. We also offer an option for a 25 mm access diameter window with a thickness of 1.5 mm
- Transmission experiments use an alternative bottom flange with a second window fitted and a transmission sample holder
- Additional or replacement window flanges available via the Oxford Instruments Direct - Cryospares® on-line catalogue
- Pump options
- A simple GF4 oil-free vane pump is supplied for operation to 3.2 K
- Lower temperatures to 2.7 K use an EPS40 single-stage rotary pump
- Temperature controller
- Flexible single- or 3-channel ITC503
- Transfer tubes
- Choose a low loss transfer tube (LLT600 for horizontal operation or LLT700 for vertical operation) for minimum helium consumption. The transfer tube can be fitted with a horizontal or vertical entry arm
- An automated needle valve can be fitted to the LLT to allow automation of the helium flow regulation and optimisation of the helium consumption
- Alternatively use a TTL200 lightweight liquid helium transfer tube
- Magnetic field
- The MicrostatHiresII can also be fitted/retrofitted with a pillar for easy integration in a room temperature bore superconducting magnet or an electromagnet (see image below); the standard cap and the pillar are interchangeable

Software control
- Oxford Instruments electronics products are controllable through the OxSoft software using RS232, ISOBUS or GPIB interfaces
- LabVIEW virtual instruments are provided for Oxford Instruments electronics products to allow full PC-based control and monitoring. These can be integrated into a complete LabVIEW data acquisition system
